The Community Challenge Launches Website as a Civic Engagement Resource to Share Ideas, Engage in Activities, and Transform the Community

Flint, MI (March 15, 2007): The Community Challenge is proud to officially launch its website. The website is a tool for individuals and organizations to transform the way business is done in Genesee County by demonstrating the power of citizen involvement and by developing new patterns of collaborative leadership.

The website, located at www.thecommunitychallenge.org, provides resources to share ideas, engage in activities, volunteer, attend events, get involved in “Front Porch” and Catalytic Conversations to share ideas, youth training and education, and more. A standout feature of the website is the Engagement Toolkit which provides information on how to implement a range of civic engagement processes that may be applied to small, informal groups; to larger, more formal systems; and everything in between.

In 2003, hundreds of residents from Flint, Michigan and surrounding areas in Genesee County came together to start a movement for positive change known as the Community Challenge.

The Community Challenge is an initiative dedicated to building a better community where citizens – from youth to older adults - regularly organize to bring about the change they desire; where leaders value and incorporate civic engagement as a regular component to key decision making processes related to public agenda issues; and where area non-profits have the capacity to provide a sustain-able civic engagement infrastructure to support ongoing civic engagement.

The four core partners to the Community Challenge are University Outreach, UM Flint offering Resource Connection, Skill Development, and Civic Engagement Workshops through the University’s Amazing U programs; the Community Foundation of Greater Flint serves as the Host Agency for the Community Challenge, providing overall administrative support of the initiative; the Resource Center offers leadership and civic engagement trainings to youth and adults in the community; and The Flint Club offering a single point of contact to connect with community engagement tools and the people that can support your community engagement work.

Funding for this initiative is provided by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Ruth Mott Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, with additional funding provided by The Bishop Trust, The Whiting Foundation, and additional CFGF donors.
